Alagappa University has its roots in a group of educational institutions founded by the renowned philanthropist and educationist Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar during the 1950s. Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar also donated 440 acres of green and spacious land to the Government. Later, Alagappa University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu through a Special Act of the State Legislature on 9 May 1985.
